Statement on Elizabeth City Shooting

April 30, 2021

Within a week, we have been shown that the guilty verdict in Minnesota has our justice system looking in the right direction but not moving in the right direction. We have been shown yet again—at the price of Andrew Brown Jr.’s life—that the police have prioritized serving a warrant over protecting their community.

There was no reason for a dozen officers to approach a man in a parked car, in his own driveway, who had his hands on his steering wheel.

The decision by Judge Jeff Foster to withhold footage from the public is not only an affront to justice and police accountability but an affront to Brown’s family and community—all who watch justice slip through their fingers as the footage is hidden from public view.

There needs to be accountability for those involved, not smoke and mirrors.
